  7. Revenue

Why Go-to-Market Strategies Break Down

  • Wrong Target Market

You’re trying to sell to too many customer types without knowing where product-market fit and commercial potential are strongest.

  • Unclear Positioning

Prospects understand what your product does, but not why they should choose it over alternatives.

  • Sales & Marketing Misalignment

Marketing targets one audience while sales pursues another, creating weak leads, low conversion and wasted resources.

  • No Repeatable Growth Motion

Revenue still depends on founder relationships, referrals or individual performers rather than a scalable commercial system.

  • Targeting
  • Positioning
  • Acquisition
  • Conversion
  • Revenue

Build the Commercial System That Connects Your Product to Revenue

Go-to-market strategy defines the process through which a particular product/service is targeted at the appropriate customer base, communicates value to the customer, and generates sustainable revenue.

  • Who?

    Target Customer

    Ideal customers and buying stakeholders.

  • What?

    Value Proposition

    Offer, problem and value proposition.

  • Why?

    Differentiation

    Positioning and differentiation.

  • How Much?

    Monetization

    Pricing and packaging.

  • Where?

    Channels

    Sales, marketing and distribution channels.

  • How?

    Execution

    Customer acquisition and sales motion.

  • How Scale?

    Economics

    Measurement, economics and optimization.

When Do You Need Go-to-Market Strategy Consulting?

  • Launching a New Product

When you need to determine who to target, how to position the product and how to generate initial demand.

  • Entering a New Market

Your current approach may not transfer to a new geography, vertical or customer segment.

  • Moving Beyond Founder-Led Sales

The founder can sell, but the team cannot replicate the process consistently.

  • Growth Has Stalled

Demand exists, but customer acquisition, conversion or channel economics are preventing scale.

  • Sales & Marketing Are Misaligned

Teams disagree on ICP, qualification, messaging and ownership.

  • Repositioning an Existing Offer

The product has evolved, but your positioning, packaging or commercial motion has not.

Go-to-Market Strategy Is Bigger Than Marketing

  • Go-to-Market Strategy

Determines target market, ICP, buyer, positioning, value proposition, offer, pricing, sales motion, marketing motion, distribution, customer journey and KPIs.

  • Marketing Strategy

Determines awareness, campaigns, content, paid acquisition, SEO, social, email and demand generation.

Marketing is one part of your go-to-market strategy, not the entire strategy.
Need tactical digital execution? Vicious Marketing handles that layer.

    90-Day GTM Roadmap

Start With the Customers You Have the Best Chance of Winning

  1. Total Market
  2. Target Segment
  3. Ideal Customer Profile
  4. Priority Accounts
  • Industry

Where does the strongest fit exist?

  • Company Size

Which company profile supports your economics?

  • Problem

Which companies experience the problem most intensely?

  • Trigger

    What creates urgency to buy?

  • Product Fit

Where can the product deliver the strongest outcome?

  • Economics

Which customers produce sustainable revenue and margin?

A stronger GTM strategy starts by narrowing the market, not trying to sell to everyone.

Give Customers a Reason to Choose You

  1. Customer
  2. Problem
  3. Alternative
  4. Your Solution
  5. Differentiation
  6. Proof
  7. Outcome
  1. Who is this product for?

  2. What does this product do?

  3. In which category does it compete?

  4. What is the alternative that the customer could have chosen?

  5. How is this product unique?

  6. Why should the customer trust you?

How Should You Take Your Offer to Market?

  • Sales-Led

Complex product, higher contract value, human-led buying process.

  • Product-Led

Customers experience product value before or during conversion.

  • Marketing-Led

Marketing creates demand that converts into revenue.

  • Channel-Led

Partners, distributors, resellers or marketplaces provide customer access.

  • Hybrid

Several motions operate together based on customer or segment.

There is no universally best GTM model. The right motion depends on the customer, buying process, product complexity, deal size and unit economics.

Our Go-to-Market Strategy Framework

An eight-stage method that moves from understanding today’s position to a growing, measured commercial engine.

  1. Diagnose
  2. Select
  3. Define
  4. Position
  5. Commercialize
  6. Activate
  7. Launch
  8. Scale
  1. Diagnose

    Understand Where You Are Today.

The process begins with an honest assessment of existing customers, sales, marketing, product, price, funnel, distribution, competitors, and economics in order to build a realistic strategy based on what is really going on.

  2. Select

    Decide Where to Compete.

With the current state understood, this stage chooses the specific market, segment, vertical, geography or use case the GTM strategy will be built around, rather than trying to serve everyone at once.

  3. Define

Identify Who You Need to Win.

This stage builds the segmentation, ideal customer profile, personas and buying committee map needed to know exactly who the business is selling to and who influences that decision.

  4. Position

Define Why Customers Should Choose You.

Here value proposition, differentiation, positioning, and messaging are established, such that there is a well-defined reason for why the customer selects one business over others that are being considered.

  5. Commercialize

Define What and How You Sell.

This stage builds the offer, packaging, pricing and revenue model, translating the positioning into something customers can actually buy.

  6. Activate

    Build the Customer Acquisition Motion.

Sales, marketing, channels, partnerships and the customer journey are defined together, so acquisition runs as one connected system rather than disconnected tactics.

  7. Launch

    Turn Strategy Into Action.

Priorities, owners, timeline, budget, campaigns, enablement and KPIs are set so the strategy moves into market on a defined schedule rather than drifting.

  8. Optimize

    Learn, Improve and Scale.

Data, experiments, customer feedback, conversion analysis and channel economics are used to continuously refine the GTM motion after launch.

    Win Rate

Increased up from a 14% baseline across all reps.

  • -21%

    Sales Cycle

    Compressed opportunity-to-close velocity dramatically.

  • +48%

    Pipeline Volume

Higher concentration of strictly qualified ICP deals.

Situation

A B2B software company had seen consistent growth through founder-led sales, but was now poised for its next funding round and thus needed a go-to-market motion that could be scaled rather than one built around a single relationship-driven seller.

Challenge

The company’s ideal customer profile had never been formally defined. Positioning varied depending on who was in the room, pricing had been negotiated case by case with no consistent framework, and the two sales hires brought on to scale beyond the founder were struggling to close deals at anywhere near the founder’s win rate.

What We Changed

A formal ICP was built using existing customer data to identify the segment with the strongest fit and fastest time to value. The messaging and positioning of the company were tailored to that segment’s particular challenge, there was a pricing and packaging structure replaced ad hoc negotiation, and there was an actual sales methodology and qualification process developed to have something for the new hires to follow rather than mimic the founders intuition.

Results

Within two quarters of rollout, the new sales hires’ win rate improved to go up to 29% from 14%, their sales cycle became 21% shorter, and their qualified pipeline volume went up by 48%, as marketing started to target the newly identified ICP and not the wider general audience.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is go-to-market strategy consulting?

The go-to-market strategy consulting entails establishing the right means for reaching out to and communicating with potential customers who will be able to purchase the product/service in question. The go-to-market strategy touches on all aspects ranging from target market and ICP up to positioning and pricing.

What does a go-to-market consultant do?

The go-to-market consultant performs market analysis along with the competitive assessment, identifies the perfect customer avatar and buying committee, creates positioning and messaging, shapes the offer, pricing, selling approach and channels, and creates a launch strategy roadmap to execute everything.

What should a go-to-market strategy include?

The complete GTM strategy should consist of the following components: market analysis, competitive analysis, customer segmentation, identification of ICP, positioning, messaging, offer and pricing, sales motion, channel strategy, approach to demand generation, sales enablement, and launch/execution plan.

When should we hire a GTM consultant?

Common triggers include launching a new product, entering a new market, going past the founders’ capability to make the sale, stunted growth even with demand in place. If there is an improper coordination between the sales and marketing departments, or repositioning of a product whose go-to-market strategy is outdated, then also you need a GTM consultant

How do you define an ideal customer profile?

By examining industry fit, company size, the intensity of the problem being solved, the trigger that creates buying urgency, where the product delivers the strongest outcome. It is also important to define which customer profile produces sustainable revenue and margin, rather than defining the ICP from assumption alone.

How do you choose the right GTM model?

By evaluating the product’s complexity, typical deal size, buying process and underlying unit economics, then selecting the motion, sales-led, product-led, marketing-led, channel-led, or a hybrid, that fits those realities rather than defaulting to whatever model is currently fashionable.

What is the difference between GTM strategy and marketing strategy?

Go-to-market strategy covers the full commercial system: target market, ICP, positioning, offer, pricing, sales motion, marketing motion, distribution and KPIs. Marketing strategy is one component within it. GTM focused specifically on awareness, campaigns, content and demand generation.

What is the difference between growth strategy and GTM strategy?

Growth strategy decides where growth should come from, such as a new market, segment or revenue stream. Go-to-market strategy decides how to win a specific market once that direction has already been chosen.

Can you help implement the GTM strategy?

Yes. Support can continue beyond the strategy itself into execution, with Vicious Marketing providing tactical marketing execution where that specific layer is needed.

How long does a go-to-market consulting engagement take?

Most strategy engagements follow market analysis, ICP development, positioning, and commercial design in four to eight weeks. But launch and implementation services beyond that period depends on the extent of hands-on support required by the organization.

Build a Go-to-Market Strategy That Can Actually Scale

Stop relying on disconnected sales tactics and marketing campaigns. Build a clear commercial strategy around the right customers, positioning, pricing, channels and revenue model.
